Porcarelli Gino & Co S.r.l.

Valorization of recyclable waste and production of alternative fuels

Porcarelli Gino & Co S.r.l. is the mother of all Porcarelli Group Companies. Located in Rome in the Rocca Cencia industrial complex, the Company has a mechanical treatment plant, aimed at the recovery of raw materials and the production of Secondary Solid Fuels (CSS). Adjacent to this plant is located the one for receiving and treating undifferentiated municipal waste.

In addition, Porcarelli Gino & Co. has a multipurpose platform located in the industrial area of Civitavecchia for the selection and recovery of waste from separated collections and for the storage of hazardous and non-hazardous waste. All our plants have been designed and built with the primary objective of recovering raw materials from waste and diverting residual fractions that can no longer be recycled from landfills, valorizing them as quality Secondary Solid Fuels to be used as an alternative to traditional fossil fuels in thermal processes for energy production.

Secondary Solid Fuels

Mechanical Treatment Plant

The Mechanical Treatment plant represents Porcarelli Group ‘s flagship plant. Constructed in 2011, the plant was conceived and designed to valorize residual waste, downstream of all useful prevention, reuse, separate collection and recycling practices.

Thanks to the investments made and the know-how acquired over the years, it has been possible to build a plant capable of extracting additional raw materials from these residual fractions and transforming the residual matrix into a Solid Fuel with high calorific value, suitable for replacing traditional fossil fuels in energy production, thus leaving the use of landfills only as an absolute residual.

CSS, or Secondary Solid Fuel, is a solid fuel produced from waste. To be considered as such, it must meet the classification and specification characteristics identified of the technical standards UNI EN ISO 21640:2021 as amended and supplemented.

The CSS produced in Porcarelli’s plants is a Secondary Solid Fuel with high calorific value. The plant is designed to operate flexibly and offer the Client a product that is suitable for their needs, both in terms of quality and size.

The plant includes several stages of treatment:

Municipal Waste Treatment

Rome Storage Facility

Developed over an area of about 10,000 square meters, this plant was designed and built for the reception, storage and pretreatment of undifferentiated municipal waste. Processing takes place inside a shed of about 2,000 square meters kept under constant vacuum and purification, using a suitable biofiltration system.

A production line with a capacity of 400,000 tons per year is installed in this area to remove under-sieve fractions by primary shredding, screening, and deferization, which are destined either for biostabilization to obtain a dry fraction suitable for delivery to treatment plants for the recovery of fractions that are still recyclable, or sent to waste-to-energy

Hazardous and non-hazardous waste treatment

Civitavecchia Storage Facility

Located in the industrial area of Civitavecchia, the plant covers an area of about 10,000 square meters.

Thanks to the know-how and experience gained from the Group’s other plants, this plant has also become, in a short time, a reference platform for municipalities in the area that have implemented separate waste collection services. It also has a covered area of about 2,500 square meters where sorting and selection operations are carried out, with volumetric adjustment of waste, special and municipal.

The plant, in particular, can handle 68,000 tons of waste per year, including 19,000 tons of hazardous waste. There is also a total covered area of about 3,200 square meters where treatment and storage operations are carried out. Waste from this plant is sent to two different production lines: one for material recovery, the other for sorting, reconditioning and storage of waste.
